Anyone for a check up?

Most of us know we should have an annual health check up, but do we actually do it? And do we understand the tests and examinations we are having done? (and yes there is a difference between a test and an examination!). Most of us will answer “no” to at least one of those questions. Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can prevent a lot of problems in the future. The main aim of a check up is to detect illness occurring in the first place. In adults up to 40 years, a check up every 2 years is appropriate. Adults over 40 should have a check up every year. Health checks should not be reserved for when you are feeling unwell – they are a great way of ensuring your general health is maintained.

To prepare for your health check up get a good night’s sleep the night before and stop all food and drink for at least 8 hours before your tests as the levels in your blood can give an inaccurate result in your blood sugar and blood cholesterol test results. It is recommended to have your tests done between 8:00 am and 9:00 am in the morning after a good night’s rest.

A choice of breakfast along with tea or coffee is also included in your check up program once your blood samples have been taken. The whole process from start to finish including results and doctor’s consultation normally takes from three to four hours to complete.
