Bangkok–26 Aug–Communication and More

As a leader in renal care, Baxter Thailand recently opened its first peritoneal dialysis (PD) manufacturing facility in the country to serve the critical healthcare needs of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The new facility will enhance Baxter’s ability to provide life-sustaining PD therapy for more than 16,000 patients living in Thailand.

The facility, located at the Amata City Industrial Estate in Rayong Province, will create job opportunities for more than 400 people in the community in a variety of areas, including pharmaceutical production, quality systems, laboratory sciences, engineering and industrial automation, and safety and environmental protection.

“This new facility underscores Baxter’s commitment to the Thailand market, to ESRD patients and to the local community,” said Paul Vibert, corporate vice president and president, International, Baxter International Inc.

Since 2008, Baxter has supported Thailand’s PD First policy, which focuses on PD as the first therapeutic option for ESRD patients. The initiative was launched by the National Health Security Office (NHSO) to provide affordable healthcare options to ESRD patients covered under the universal coverage health scheme.

“ESRD impacts more than 70,000 lives in Thailand today. Baxter’s manufacturing plant will produce PD solutions to help save patient lives here in Thailand. These patients can work and lead a normal life without the burden that can accompany other treatment options. I’m also delighted to see investment in the country that features high technological advancements which will help create jobs and income locally, leading to a sustainable economy in Thailand,” said Sonthirat Sonthijirawong, advisor to Minister of Industry, and the chairperson at the facility opening.

To mark the opening, Baxter also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pharmacy Faculty of Mahidol University, to advance pharmacy knowledge through an internship program for local students.

Operating in Thailand since 1994, Baxter offers a broad portfolio of hospital and renal products to meet the diverse healthcare needs of Thailand patients. In addition to supplying several million containers of PD solutions to patients’ homes each year, Baxter Thailand provides nutrition, anesthesia, biosurgery, oncology and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) products and services.
